I need to change my resolution on my PC so I can get into a specific website to do studying, I go to change the screen resolution and its at 800 by 600 and i need it to be at 1024 by 768, when i go to apply it the whole screen turns black and it says "unable to support input", this computer is a bit old it is a asus and I run windows xp, my screen is a flat screen acer, is there anyway i can get this to work?, I thought i had it working when i changed the resolution but i had to start it up in safe mode and i dont want to have to do it like that again, plus it just ended up correcting it self back to what it was originally

It does sound like your monitor but if it works in safe mode i dont think it is. 800 by 600 is the "somethings wrong" resolution. plus i have never heard of a flat screen monitor that cant at least handle 1024 by 768. i have and acer flat screen and i run a res of 1680 by 1050. if you can get a higher res in safe mode but not in regular mode then its going to be an OS problem. start by identifying who makes your video card or if you even have one. if you have a video card upgrade you drivers. if you dont have a video card update and drivers you can find on your manufacturer's website. one other possibility is a virus, how ever unlikely it is, viruses can do some crazy stuff.
