Public invited to speak on disputed Walmart site (The State)
Residents can weigh in Dec. 19 on a controversial plans to put a Walmart store
on the site of a city-owned baseball stadium in Olympia.
The public forum at the 701 Whaley building is set for the day before Columbia
City Council is to reconsider an earlier vote to proceed with signing a
contract to sell the site to developer Bright-Meyers of Atlanta. Bright-Meyers
is the real estate arm of the Wal-Mart company.
Anyone who wants to speak at the forum must sign up for the two-hour event,
which begins at 6 p.m. in the Olympia Room at the building at 701 Whaley St.
Each speaker will be allotted three minutes, as they are during routine public
hearings before City Council.
Mayor Steve Benjamin has said he plans to invite Bright Meyers representatives
to attend.
Council told critics of the project, widely perceived as being a 150,000
